"Be a visible representative who knows the heartbeat of the community."

Regina Lewis-Ward is currently running to represent House District 109 in the Georgia State Legislature. She is a longtime community leader who previously served on the City of Stockbridge Council where she secured funds and advocated for families with disabled children. She also partnered with the U.S Small Business Administration to host series of webinars to help minority women business owners.

Can you tell us about the office you are running for/your current elected position? I am running for GA HD-109 which covers Stockbridge, McDonough, Conyers, and Covington 

What made you decide to run for office? I decided to run to be the next Georgia state representative from District 109 because I understand that people are not thriving under the current leadership and they deserve an advocate who listens and knows the heartbeat of the people. 

What is the most important issue you are focusing on in your campaign? The most important issue I am focusing on the Lewis-Ward for GA Families campaign is: Helping to empower working families by advocating for issues such as livable wages, affordable housing, and equitable access to health care 

Why is the leadership of Black women needed right now? The Leadership of Black women is needed now more than ever because for too long black and marginalized communities have not had representation or the type of leaders who will advocate on issues that directly impact their lives. As a Black woman, I want to uplift not only marginalized communities, but ensure voters in GA HD 109 have an advocate and champion their issues. 

What advice would you give other women who want to get involved in their community or who want to run for office? The first piece of advice I would give to other women who either want to get involved in their community or run for office is to listen to the concerns of the community you’d like to represent, and advocate for their needs. Secondly, attend an Emerge training which will equip you will the necessary tools to help you on your journey in public service. Lastly, be a visible representative who knows the heartbeat of the community.
